I am not a spontaneous painter. I plan. I start with something that I have seen. A house, a tree, a flower. I do drawings to try and figure out some kind of pattern from the chaos, some system that allows the natural and man-made to live together. I draw until they do.
I paint with oil paint on a panel. All the paintings in this category are originally 11" x 14". I use a palette knife instead of a brush and work the paint wet into wet. This allows the bottom layer to show thru the top creating a more nuanced color. I also use other techniques — stamping, sanding and scratching — to create textures and lines. These effects are visual rather than sculptural, so the transition to print is fairly straightforward.
